Miami International Film Festival 2016 shines a light on Miami
Featuring international stars and bringing local filmmakers into the light, the acclaimed Miami International Film Festival 2016 will present 129 films from 40 different countries at several venues around the city from March 4 trhough March 13, 2016.
This year's festival will be one celebrating the Miami's cultural diversity in all its form through the eyes of local filmmakers, while Spain will be the guest of honor of the 33rd edition of the Miami International Film Festival with a solid dozen movies racing for awards.
Presented by Miami Dade College, this year's "MIFF" will also give attendees the chance to screen a dozen world premieres and several special events, workshops and masterclasses.
MIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL MOVIE HIGHLIGHTS
The Miami International Film Festival will open with My Big Night, a comedy from spanish director Álex de la Iglesia, in presence of the iconic spanish pop singer Raphael who appears in the film. Andrew Currie’s The Steps will close the festival with a comedy about a hectic marriage joining two wacky families together.
Among the 100 feature-length movies or documentaries and 29 short films, most anticipated screnings include The Olive Tree (Icíar Bollaín), Un caballo llamado Elefante (Andrés Waissbluth), and Argentina (Carlos Saura).
World-famous movie stars will also abound within this year's schedule, from Colin Farrell in the unidentified film object The Lobster, to Salma Hayek and Vincent Cassel in the surreal Tale of Tales.
A slew of movies will be representing Spain from the festival opener My Big Night (Álex de la Iglesia), to Truman (Cesc Gay), Spanish Affair 2 (Emilio Martínez Lázaro), Nothing in Exchange (Daniel Guzmán), and Ma Ma (Julio Medem) starring Penelope Cruz.
2016 FESTIVAL FOCUSES ON MIAMI AND ITS LOCAL FILMMAKERS
Organizers of the Miami International Film Festival have responded to public demand by bringing forward Florida Focus, a series of screening featuring many local directors and actors, as well as Miami itself through various movies and documentaries among which:
The Rebound, a documentary on Miami Heat Wheels’ wheelchair basketball athletes directed by Shaina Allen that will be presented in world premiere;
Queen of Thursdays, a portrait of cuban star ballerina Rosario Suárez directed by Orlando Rojas who's directing Miami's Tower Theater programs;
Hearts of Palm, a cultural voyage and love story directed by Monica Peña;
I’ve Never Not Been from Miami, a series of 10 short films about Miami artists directed by a collective of Miami filmmakers (Andrew Hevia, Joey Daoud, Jonathan David Kane, Monica Peña, Tabatha Mudra, Keisha Rae Witherspoon, Kenny Riches, Jacob Katel, Kareem Tabsch, Tina Francisco).
MIFF SPECIAL EVENTS AND SOIREES
The festival will also present several special events such as the Marquee Series, featuring on-stage conversations by international filmmakers and actors such as famed actress Monica Bellucci, and respected directors Gavin Hood and Deepa Mehta.
Also on schedule is the 4th edition of Lee Brian Schrager’s Culinary Cinema and its lineup of movies about local Miami food and restaurants, and several masterclasses such as Making the Leap from Short to Feature Film; Producing in Florida and Beyond; and Google-sponsored From Doodle to Pixels: Over a Hundred Years of Spanish Animation.
On Friday March 4, The opening of the festival will see its returrn to its most traditional venue - the Historic Alfred I. Dupont Building - for an Opening Night Party mixing fine food, loud music, sirupy cocktails, and much cheering and dancing.
8 days later on Saturday March 12, the Pyrat Rum Awards Night Party will mark the unofficial ending of the festival as winning directors and actors will celebrate their achievements witth Miami’s cinema community.
